It reduces damage in transit by closing the box, and it is what makes a stacked column behave: the lid takes the container above it rather than the load below taking it.
Two details are worth knowing before you compare it with anything else:

riding over its edge.
The outside is 10 mm larger each way than the inside, which is the lip that locates it over the container rim. Dimensions carry a ±5 mm production tolerance.
A note on the thickness. The specification and the datasheet both say 40 mm; the drawing dimensions the lid at 78 mm on its edge view. They are almost certainly measuring different things, the panel against the full moulding, and we publish the specification figure. Ask us if the stacked height matters to your plan.
A lid is rated by the container it closes. Use that container's figures, and ask us if you are stacking to the limit.
Washable and suitable for disinfection. Resistant to water, to airborne environmental pollutants and to corrosive chemicals. Rated −4 °F to +104 °F (−20 to +40 °C).
Logo embossed. Printing is sometimes listed for this lid, but the datasheet names embossing alone, so we publish the narrower of the two. RFID transponders can be integrated. Ask us for the insert size and we will confirm it. Supplied in grey, white, navy or blue, with other colours to order.
1,560 per jumbo trailer and 1,300 in a 40 ft high cube. Lids stack flat, which is why a trailer takes fifteen times as many of these as it does of the container they close.
